Native goats and cows grazing Galicia's hills to cut wildfire risk
In Spain's Galicia region, native goats, sheep and cows are being used to graze on flammable undergrowth, reducing wildfire risk. The initiative grew in response to Spain's worst wildfire year in 2025, when nearly 119,000 hectares burned — roughly twice the size of Madrid. Among the animals is the Cachena, a native cow breed adept at foraging across mountainous terrain.
