Japan to cut food consumption tax to 1% from April 2027

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced on Thursday that the consumption tax on food will be cut from 8% to 1% for two years, starting April 2027. The measure is designed to ease the burden of persistently high prices on households. Economists have raised concerns about the fiscal and inflationary consequences.
