Crete wildfire: 8,000 evacuated, two firefighters killed
A wildfire burning since Wednesday in the Rethymnon region of Crete forced the evacuation of around 8,000 people. Two firefighters were killed during firefighting operations. Strong, shifting winds are hampering efforts to control the blaze, with the deputy governor Maria Lioni describing the past night as "nightmarish."
