NYU geologist finds Earth's mass extinctions follow a 27.5-million-year cycle
Prof. Michael Rampino of New York University analysed 89 major geological events from the past 260 million years and found that extreme volcanic eruptions, dramatic sea-level changes and mass extinctions follow a cycle lasting 27.5 million years. The study confirms longstanding suspicions among some scientists that a deeper rhythm underlies Earth's apparent geological chaos. The finding could reshape understanding of the planet's natural history.
