Quantum algorithms could help astronomers image Earth-like exoplanets

Hyunsoo Choi of Hanyang University in South Korea and co-authors have published a preprint on arXiv proposing a new way to directly image Earth-like exoplanets. Such planets are between 100 million and 10 billion times fainter than their host stars, making them nearly impossible to detect. The theoretical method combines smart computer algorithms with quantum physics to filter out starlight and reveal the orbiting planet.
