Google replaces hacker group names with two-word cryptonyms

Google's Threat Intelligence Group is retiring the mix of Mandiant and TAG identifiers for hacker groups, replacing them with two-word cryptonyms for several dozen of its most-tracked clusters. The second word encodes attribution: CASTLE for China, ION for Iran, NEPTUNE for North Korea, RELIC for Russia, and COMET for criminal groups without clear state ties. The well-known Sandworm group, for example, becomes Sandworm Relic under the new system.
