US bans foreign-made robots — who wins and who loses?

The US Federal Communications Commission on July 28 added "foreign-produced advanced robotic devices" to its Covered List of technologies deemed an unacceptable national security risk. The ban covers Chinese humanoid and four-legged robots as well as a wide range of other foreign-made devices, including the latest robot vacuum cleaners. The Trump administration justified the move by citing cybersecurity vulnerabilities previously found in Chinese-made robots, though the FCC is legally required to act on direction from a qualifying national security authority.
