Ocean iron fertilisation cuts CO₂ but harms ecosystems, study finds

A study published in Nature on 29 July 2026 used a process-rich global biogeochemical model to assess the trade-offs between carbon dioxide removal efficiency and ecosystem harm across ten ocean biomes under ocean iron fertilisation. The method can effectively sequester CO₂, but comes with significant ecological costs. The findings complicate the case for using ocean iron fertilisation as a climate intervention.
