2D polymer splits water into hydrogen and oxygen with record quantum efficiency

Researchers have developed a photocatalytic water-splitting strategy using polymeric carbon nitride crystals that forces charge carriers to migrate out-of-plane via internal electric fields and facet-selective nanofilms. The approach markedly increases the apparent quantum efficiency of overall water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen. The findings were published in Nature on 29 July 2026.
