Earliest siphuncle-bearing cephalopod found in early Cambrian rocks
Researchers have described a new early Cambrian cephalopod species, Eoceras shaanxiense, which preserves septa and a segmented tube resembling a primitive siphuncle. The discovery pushes back the known origins of cephalopods and sheds light on the early evolution of chambered shells used for buoyancy regulation. The findings were published in Nature.
