Cryo-ET reveals structure of poxvirus portal complex in vaccinia virus

Cryo-electron tomography has revealed the structure of a conserved hexameric portal complex that spans the core wall of vaccinia virus. The complex is linked to key viral functions including particle assembly, mRNA release and genome uncoating. The study was published in Nature on 29 July 2026.
