New data linking wartime US home loan records to race and immigration status show that Black borrowers were disproportionately excluded from New Deal mortgage programmes. The study, published in Nature, provides the most detailed evidence yet of racial discrimination in the mid-20th-century US credit system. The findings help explain persistent racial wealth gaps in the United States.
