Scientists demonstrate perpendicular polarization switching in layered ferroelectrics

Researchers publishing in Nature have demonstrated perpendicular switching of the polarization state in the layered ferroelectric bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12) using trilinear coupling. The method allows the in-plane polarization component to be controlled by an out-of-plane electric field. The finding could open new avenues for memory and electronic device applications.
