Avalanche-like lithium intercalation governs graphite battery electrode dynamics

Operando optical microscopy has revealed that lithium intercalation and deintercalation in graphite battery electrodes proceeds in avalanche-like bursts rather than smoothly. Local structural disorder governs phase-transition dynamics and ion transport. The finding deepens understanding of lithium-ion battery electrode behaviour.
