Bacteria use diverse immune receptors to detect bacteriophage core proteins

A systematic study of prokaryotic STAND NTPases — relatives of animal and plant immune receptors — has uncovered a wide range of antiviral sensors in bacteria capable of detecting most core structural and replicative proteins of bacteriophages. The findings shed new light on the evolution of innate immunity across life forms.
