Critically endangered Australian bat population drops 16% — scientists baffled
Scientists recorded approximately 5,000 fewer southern bent-wing bats than usual at the Naracoorte bat cave in South Australia this summer — a decline of up to 16% of the species' population. The species is critically endangered and the cause of the sudden drop remains unknown. These small russet-coloured microbats roost in caves and forage for insects across south-west Victoria and south-east South Australia.
