The "Savage Peoples" Myth: How the Yanomami Were Misread by the West

In 1968, American anthropologist Napoleon Chagnon published the controversial book "Yanomamö: The Fierce People", portraying the Amazonian people as brutal and aggressive. The book became hugely influential but was later widely challenged by researchers who pointed to cultural misunderstandings and the author's own biases. The Yanomami case has since become a textbook example of how contact between cultures can generate deeply flawed narratives.
