Earth's "gold kitchen" discovered beneath the seafloor near volcanoes
Researchers analysing volcanic glass from the Kermadec island arc north of New Zealand have identified a natural process that concentrates gold in rising magma. Water-rich mantle rock repeatedly melts beneath subduction zones, gradually building up gold concentrations. Intense melting breaks down sulphur-rich minerals that normally trap gold, releasing the metal into the melt. The finding sheds new light on how gold deposits form on Earth.
