BMW to cut 8,000 jobs by end of 2027 via voluntary redundancy

German car manufacturer BMW is cutting thousands of jobs by the end of 2027 through a voluntary redundancy program, a corporate spokesperson told POLITICO.

Up to 8,000 jobs are expected to be culled under the program, with offers going out beginning in October, according to internal corporate sources.

The program targets German-based workers in administrative and research and development roles, the spokesperson said.

The severance program — which was negotiated with the works council over six weeks — is being presented to workers in Munich this week.

BMW is the latest in a string of announced job cuts. Volkswagen is expected to lay off 100,000 workers and close factories. Porsche is laying off 5,000 workers and Mercedes is mulling its own workforce changes.

BMW signalled earlier this year that a workforce reduction was imminent after it reduced its profit forecast for the year due to weak sales in China.
