Apple has launched its Apple Upgrade programme, letting customers pay for iPhones in monthly instalments with the option to regularly swap to a newer model. Critics argue the scheme represents the "financialization of the affordability crisis" — rather than making devices genuinely cheaper, Apple is creating a new form of perpetual debt. Under the plan, customers never actually own their device.
