Belly fat harms the brain more than high BMI, study of 18,000 finds

A team led by neuroinformatician Anqi Qui at Hong Kong Polytechnic University analysed brain scans and cognitive test results from over 18,000 participants in the UK Biobank. The study — described as the world's first at this scale — found that where fat is stored in the body, not total weight or BMI, determines the risk of cognitive harm. Fat tissue in different body regions sends distinct and often toxic signals to the nervous system.
