Chicago trauma surgeon's new book tackles America's gun violence epidemic

Dr. Selwyn Rogers Jr., founding director of the University of Chicago Medicine Trauma Center, has written "Healing the Gun Violence Epidemic" (North Atlantic Books, 2026). The book recounts stories of gun violence victims and the advocates working to address the root causes of the crisis. Rogers established the South Side trauma center in 2018 — the area had been without one since 1991, forcing patients to endure long ambulance rides across the city.
