Asteroid impact superheated atmosphere and charbroiled dinosaurs, study finds

A new study in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences concludes that the Chicxulub asteroid impact 66 million years ago threw up a vast dust cloud that superheated the upper atmosphere, effectively charbroiling surface-dwelling organisms and sparking widespread wildfires. Animals able to take shelter underground or underwater had a better chance of survival. The findings add detail to the Alvarez hypothesis, first proposed in 1980, which attributes the mass extinction of the dinosaurs to a massive asteroid or comet impact.
