6.8 Earthquake Near Kumamoto Collapses Mall, 150,000 Evacuated

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck near Kumamoto, a city of over 700,000 on Japan's Kyushu island, at 4:27 p.m. local time Tuesday. Part of a shopping centre collapsed, trapping shoppers who were later evacuated and hospitalised, and a stone wall at historic Kumamoto Castle toppled. More than 150,000 people were sent to evacuation shelters, and a brief tsunami warning was issued and then lifted within an hour.
