Polish archaeologists launch first expedition to Serengeti to study human origins

Poland's first full-scale archaeological expedition to Tanzania's Serengeti National Park launches in summer 2026, led by Prof. Marta Osypińska of the University of Wrocław in partnership with the Polish Academy of Sciences. The park borders Olduvai Gorge, where key hominin remains millions of years old were discovered, yet Serengeti itself has seen no systematic archaeological research since the 1970s. The Polish team was invited by Tanzanian authorities after political instability in Sudan forced them to abandon earlier fieldwork there.
