Black hole 30,000 light-years from galaxy center devours star, blazing like 10 billion suns

NASA's Swift Observatory detected a supermassive black hole ripping apart a star more than 30,000 light-years from the center of a distant galaxy. The resulting flare briefly outshone the entire host galaxy in ultraviolet light. The black hole responsible has a mass roughly one million times that of the Sun.
