Mike Flanagan joins Henry Cavill's Warhammer 40K Amazon series, but release is years away

Warhammer 40K's small-screen expansion got some big updates in the new annual report from Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree. First up, the upcoming Warhammer 40K TV series has enlisted the help of horror maestro Mike Flanagan, who was behind Netflix's Haunting of Hill House and the script for the upcoming Clayface .

Rountree confirmed he has completed "initial outlines" and "should soon be moving on to script". Henry Cavill and Vertigo are still involved, but the CEO makes clear that this will not be a quick process. "This is a long-term partnership with Amazon – and these adaptations will take years to bring successfully to market," he added, referring to "films and television series" that they're working on.

Another detail revealed in the annual report is that there is a Warhammer 40K animated series on the way. This will feature Space Marines – Deathwatch and is being written by Masters of the Air screenwriter John Orloff. No more revealed on that but it seems the Warhammer universe is taking its expansion onto the small screen seriously.

They will also have an episode in Amazon's Secret Level season 2, which will feature a story set in the Age of Signmar universe.

It's all quite a lot of information to take in from Games Workshop but it's reassuring to hear things are moving on the live-action series and beyond.

Cavill first announced the partnership with the company more than three years ago. "Together, we've been sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts," Cavill wrote on Instagram at the time. "Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop. That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret."
