Palace of Culture turns 71 — the story of Warsaw's iconic Soviet-era giant
Warsaw's Palace of Culture and Science, built as a "gift from the Soviet people," is turning 71. Its construction required demolishing surviving pre-war sections of the city and was completed in record time. Today it houses theatres, cinemas, museums, a swimming pool and thousands of offices, with a public viewing terrace on the 30th floor. Feral cats live in its basement, peregrine falcons nest on its tower, and the building — nicknamed "Pekin" — has become an inseparable part of Warsaw's identity.
