JWST May Detect Volcanic Exomoons Around Super-Jupiters
Scientists suggest the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) could detect exomoons similar to Jupiter's volcanically active moon Io orbiting super-Jupiter exoplanets. Io is the most volcanically active body in the Solar System, and its volcanic gases fuel Jupiter's aurorae by travelling along the planet's magnetic field lines. Researchers propose this same phenomenon — volcanic gas signatures in exoplanet aurorae — could be used to identify so-called "exo-Ios" beyond our Solar System.
