Yap: On-Device macOS Voice Dictation Using Apple's Built-In Models

Yap is a free, MIT-licensed open-source menu-bar app for macOS that converts speech to text entirely on-device, with no data ever sent to the cloud. Users set a hotkey, speak, press again, and the transcribed text is pasted into any active input field. It uses Apple's new SpeechAnalyzer and SpeechTranscriber APIs introduced in macOS 26, which benchmarks show are slightly more accurate than Whisper Small and about 3× faster, requiring no model downloads.
