Homer's Odyssey accurately reflects ancient Greek customs of hospitality (xenia), Aegean sailing practices and Bronze Age armour types, according to a historical analysis. However, the epic also contains anachronisms, blending Bronze Age settings with details from later Greek periods, and Odysseus's route is mythological rather than geographically precise. The poem was composed around the 8th century BC but depicts events set centuries earlier.
