Toyota Probox Refresh Coming in 2028 — Price May Rise From $12K

Reports suggest Toyota is planning a new generation of the Probox for 2028.

The budget wagon could adopt TNGA-B architecture and an upgraded hybrid.

Added features and new technology could raise the wagon’s starting price.

The Toyota Probox has been hauling Japan’s plumbers, sales reps and budget-minded families around since 2002, asking for nothing and getting on with it. Next to a new Prius or Corolla it looks like a fax machine on wheels, but it’s a fraction of the price and you lose almost nothing that matters. Toyota won’t say what’s next, but reports out of Japan point to a new generation landing by 2028.

The current Probox (XP160) has been around since 2014, and picked up its latest update for the 2026 model year , adding better safety kit and interior tweaks. Those changes buy it a few more years on sale, but the platform, bare-bones cabin, and boxy body can’t hide their age.

Citing insider sources, Japanese outlet Car Repo reports that Toyota is laying the groundwork for a new-generation Probox due in late 2027 or early 2028. The sources suggest the wagon could ditch its aging underpinnings for the TNGA-B architecture that already sits under the Yaris, Yaris Cross, and Aqua subcompacts.

The new platform should sharpen rigidity and trim weight while improving ride quality and handling. It could also let the wagon keep its flat, low cargo floor, one of its biggest draws. For reference, the current Probox measures 4,245 mm (167.1 inches), slotting between the Yaris and the Corolla .

Under the hood, the Probox could benefit from an updated self-charging hybrid setup bringing improved efficiency and performance. The current model is exclusively available with a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter engine in regular and hybrid forms, as the smaller 1.3-liter unit has been dropped from the lineup.

On the design front, expect the Probox to keep its utilitarian, slab-sided shape while gaining more modern LED lighting and fresh colors. With any luck, Toyota’s designers will work in a few rugged cues and make it the ideal base for adventurous builds .

If the reports pan out, the extra technology and modern hardware could carry a price. Car Repo estimates the Probox’s starting figure could climb by ¥300,000-500,000 ($1,800-$3,000). That would move the budget wagon from its current ¥1,918,400 ($11,700) past the ¥2,200,000 mark ($13,400), potentially topping the ¥2,142,800 ($13,100) of the cheapest Corolla Driving School vehicle .

Toyota hasn’t confirmed a new Probox, and no camouflaged prototypes have surfaced, so treat the rumors as rumors for now. We’d still like to see a successor happen, because the world could use another cheap wagon built to get the job done.
