Machine That Keeps Lungs Alive Outside Body Could Save 4 in 5 Donated Organs

The UK's NICE health body is backing wider use of a machine that keeps donated lungs alive outside the body, potentially saving four in five lungs currently discarded in England and Wales. The UK has one of the world's lowest lung transplantation rates. The latest NHS Blood and Transplant figures show 170 patients, including six children, are currently waiting for new lungs in the UK.
