Ford is expanding factory-backed customization across more vehicles.
Limited-edition drops aim to create exclusivity and boost demand.
Dealer-installed upgrades keep factory warranty coverage intact.
Automakers have spent decades making special editions to squeeze a little more profit from familiar vehicles, but Ford wants to take the concept a step further. Instead of simply offering another appearance package, it’s trying to turn some launches into the automotive equivalent of a limited sneaker release. If the strategy works, customers won’t just be buying a Bronco, Mustang, or Maverick. They’ll be trying to snag one before they’re gone, the same way people scramble for Nikes. This new strategy is part of Ford’s growing Custom Garage business, which launched last year as a one-stop shop for factory-approved customization. Ford is now increasing its investment in the operation as it looks to reach buyers across a wider range of price points. Buyers can get performance parts, appearance packages, and other approved accessories installed on a vehicle before they take delivery. The first example of Ford’s new strategy is the Bronco Desert Rising, a limited run of 1,000 SUVs.
Based on the Bronco Outer Banks, it wears a Utah-inspired color scheme featuring berry-colored accents, optional graphics, custom Katzkin leather upholstery, and Method wheels. The $13,695 package brings the SUV’s starting price to $57,350.

Ford says the Desert Rising is only the first entry in a new Horizon Series of exclusive releases. Speaking to CNBC , Matt Simpson, executive director of Ford Customization, compared the strategy to the excitement surrounding limited-edition Nike sneaker launches, with future packages intended to generate similar buzz. “We’re significantly increasing our investment in this group to bring more choice and to engage customers in this aftersales,” Simpson said
The Blue Oval isn’t stopping at cosmetic upgrades. Ford Custom Garage also offers extensive performance packages, including Mustang upgrades costing as much as $18,500 and an F-150 performance package approaching $27,000.
If this reminds you of how Ford ditched the Shelby name for the latest supercharged Mustang , the ideas are similar. The company believes there’s plenty of room to grow into this space. Modern vehicles are also becoming more complex and increasingly difficult for owners or non-certified shops to modify, giving automakers more control over the aftermarket work performed on them.
According to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), Americans spent $52.9 billion on aftermarket accessories and modifications in 2025, and Ford wants a larger slice of that pie.
Ford says roughly 46 percent of its U.S. customers already personalize their vehicles, with Bronco, Mustang, and F-Series buyers leading the way. The automaker also argues that customers who purchase accessories tend to be more loyal to the brand over time. This new program allows Ford to increase its margins, make customization easier for buyers, and incentivise them by keeping their warranty intact.
