Maldini resigns, Pirlo deal collapses — Italian football in turmoil
Italy's football federation had agreed terms with Andrea Pirlo to coach the national team, but the deal collapsed after controversy arose over Pirlo's "Russian chapter" in his career. Pep Guardiola had already turned down the role. Paolo Maldini resigned from a position he had taken just 10 days earlier.
