Austria extends military service to nine months citing Ukraine war

Austria's coalition government announced Monday a plan to extend compulsory military service from six to nine months. Chancellor Christian Stocker cited the fundamentally changed security landscape caused by Russia's war against Ukraine. Austria's armed forces have long functioned mainly as a civil protection force, with authorities long acknowledging the military could not defend the country against a serious outside attack.
