Aerostar high-altitude balloons tested as drone motherships for surveillance

US company Aerostar has tested its Lightning high-altitude balloon as a launch platform for a single surveillance drone, paving the way for a larger "mothership" concept capable of carrying multiple long-endurance unmanned aircraft. These balloon motherships could perform reconnaissance, electronic warfare jamming, signal relay and even strike missions, staying airborne for days or weeks. The US Army and other military branches, as well as China and Ukraine, are actively developing similar capabilities.
