Ancient DNA reveals Bronze Age Upton Lovell Shaman was a woman

Ancient DNA analysis at the Francis Crick Institute has confirmed that the Upton Lovell Shaman — a high-status religious leader and metalworker buried in Wiltshire around 4,000 years ago — was a woman, not a man as previously assumed. For years, the skeleton's male sex was taken for granted on the basis that such status must have belonged to a man. The finding is the latest example of ancient DNA overturning long-held assumptions about gender roles in prehistory.
