Bronze Age collapse mystery: science closes in on an answer

New research sheds light on one of archaeology's greatest mysteries: why the powerful civilisations of the eastern Mediterranean — including the Mycenaeans and the Hittite Empire — collapsed almost simultaneously around the 12th century BC. Egypt was also weakened and the trade networks connecting the region effectively disappeared. Scientists say the study brings them closer to understanding what triggered this synchronised catastrophe.
