Bronze Age collapse mystery: science closes in on an answer
New research sheds light on one of archaeology's greatest mysteries: why the powerful civilisations of the eastern Mediterranean — including the Mycenaeans and the Hittite Empire — collapsed almost simultaneously around the 12th century BC. Egypt was also weakened and the trade networks connecting the region effectively disappeared.
