Warsaw's "angel makers" — women who poisoned and abandoned infants in the 19th century

Historian Kamil Janicki has written about Marianna Laskowska, one of Warsaw's so-called "angel makers" — women paid by mothers to drug infants with poppy and abandon them on the streets of 19th-century Warsaw. Janicki estimates Laskowska may have been responsible for as many as 400 children's deaths, and explains the practice in the context of a very different historical attitude toward death.
