Cows emit methane in a newly discovered way beyond their gut

Scientists have described a new mechanism by which the cow's rumen — a large fermentation chamber in its digestive system — shapes methane emissions into the atmosphere. The rumen hosts tens of millions of bacteria that break down cellulose, starch and proteins, aided by microbial fungi. The finding sheds new light on how livestock microbiomes contribute to climate change.
