Chimps and Bonobos Use Hugs and Kisses to Defuse Tension, Just Like Humans

A new study finds that chimpanzees and bonobos use friendly physical contact — hugs, kisses and gentle pats — to diffuse social tension, mirroring human behaviour. Since all three ape species diverged from a common ancestor roughly six to eight million years ago, the findings suggest this peacemaking behaviour has deep evolutionary roots. The research adds to our understanding of conflict resolution among primates.
