The timing of a drought matters more than how long it lasts
New research suggests that the timing of a drought — the time of year it occurs — may have a greater impact on ecosystems and agriculture than its duration. A drought that strikes during the critical plant growing season causes significantly more damage than an equally long drought outside that period. The finding could change how scientists and farmers assess drought risk.
