Hoard of five Roman silver denarii unearthed in Halle-Nietleben, Germany
In 2025, amateur archaeologist Dirk Braungardt unearthed a hoard of five silver Roman Republican-era denarii in Halle-Nietleben in central Germany. The coins bore mysterious engraved marks and were likely buried together in a pouch by their owner. The find is exceptional because Roman silver coins are extremely rare this far north, and researchers hope it will shed light on why Roman silver reached so deep into Germanic territory during Rome's early expansion.
