Lake fly larvae dive more than 200 metres into Lake Malawi each day to hide from predators, making them exceptional among insects. They control their depth using tiny air sacs whose volume is regulated by changing their pH, enabled by a rubber-like protein called resilin. Their remarkable pressure tolerance challenges the leading explanation for why insects are absent from the open ocean.
