Influencer's Ferrari SF90 split in half in Australia — driver walked away unhurt

The SF90’s rear-end detached from the monocoque after it slid into a tree.

Remarkably, the driver of the plug-in hybrid V8 Ferrari survived unscathed.

Unless someone embarks on an ambitious rebuild, this SF90 won’t see the road again.

In 2006, a Ferrari Enzo was torn in half during a high-speed crash on California’s Pacific Coast Highway. Twenty years later, another of Ferrari’s mid-engined supercars has split into two pieces, this time in Australia .

The crash happened around 9:15 a.m. Saturday. Gold Coast property investor and influencer Sam Gordon was behind the wheel of his Ferrari SF90 Spider, a car reckoned to be worth somewhere between AU$1 million and AU$1.5 million. Local media place the scene on Rio Vista Boulevard in Mermaid Waters, and for all the wreckage, Gordon walked away without a scratch.

Images and video shared to social media show that, much like that infamous Enzo crash 20 years ago, the SF90 Spider was split in two during the crash. News.com.au reports that the car hit a tree.

The front half of the Ferrari can be seen sitting on a patch of grass next to the road, while the rear half of the car, including the twin-turbocharged V8, the transmission, and various hybrid components, is positioned roughly a dozen feet to the side. Curiously, large parts of the car’s front-end don’t appear to have suffered much damage, suggesting parts like the front wheels, bumper, hood, and headlights avoided any direct impacts.

There’s A Reason it Split In Half

Like other mid-engined supercars, the rear half of the Ferrari , including its engine and transmission, is bolted onto the car’s carbon fiber and aluminum monocoque chassis. This design helps to absorb side-on impacts and protect occupants.

No official cause for the crash has been released, although given that the SF90 delivers 986 hp, it’s not difficult to imagine what may have happened. Thankfully, it doesn’t appear as though any other cars were involved, nor were any pedestrians, despite the crash just happening feet away from a walking path.

Not long after the wreck, Gordon went on social media to confirm he’d walked away unhurt, and he took the moment to thank Ferrari for building a car that kept him alive through an impact violent enough to tear it in two.
