Mercedes-AMG revives twin-turbo V8 but won't give a launch date

Limited-run Mercedes-AMG CLE Mythos debuts the new twin-turbo V8.

The regular CLE and AMG G63 are also set to receive the new V8 engine.

An inline-six arrives alongside the upcoming AMG V8-powered models.

Mercedes-AMG is finally getting its mojo back. After a few disappointing years spent dabbling in tepid plug-in hybrids and turbocharged four-cylinders, the brand is returning to its roots with a burbling V8. When exactly it reaches the market, though, remains a bit of a mystery.

Given current emissions restrictions and its shift toward smaller powertrains, plug-in hybrids, and EVs, Mercedes-Benz had every reason to abandon V8 engines entirely, and no one would have blamed it. Instead, the brand heavily reworked its familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, fitting it with a flat-plane crank and making it fully Euro 7 compliant.

While recently speaking with Road & Track , Mercedes board member Mathias Geisen said enthusiasts need to “stay tuned” to see when AMG will get this engine.

“One step after the other,” he added. “First we have to make sure we have a very nice and sophisticated V-8, and of course we now look into market demand and have some plans of where else to use it.”

Which AMG V8s Are Coming?

All signs point towards the limited-run Mercedes CLE Mythos as being the first AMG product to use this V8. This car will serve as a spiritual successor to the fabled CLK Black Series, and production could be capped at just 30 units. While that’s good news for those fortunate enough to secure an allocation, it’s not good news for the regular AMG buyers who want a V8.

Thankfully, plenty of other AMG models are tipped to get this engine. Based on recent spy shots, one of the first could be a more conventional ’63’-badged CLE, possibly making around 577 hp and 590 lb-ft (799 Nm) of torque.

Then there’s the all-important C-Class. Comments from interim AMG boss Michael Schiebe earlier this year hinted that the current C 43 and its 2.0-liter turbo-four would give way to an inline-six C 53, clearing a slot in the lineup for a V8-powered C 63.
