17 complex organic molecules found around a young star in Orion, including DNA precursors
Scientists from institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have identified 17 complex organic molecules in the protoplanetary disc of 883 Orionis, a star 1,350 light-years away in the constellation Orion. Among the finds are the first tentative detections of ethylene glycol and glycolonitrile — compounds considered potential precursors to DNA and RNA. The research was conducted using the ALMA radio telescope array. The discovery could shed new light on the chemical origins of life in the universe.
