A tree grown from a seed that orbited the moon is now growing in New York City

An American sweet gum tree grown from a seed that traveled 1.3 million miles aboard NASA's uncrewed Artemis I mission in 2022 has been planted in Madison Square Park in Manhattan. NASA distributed hundreds of these "moon trees" across the United States to build excitement for future crewed Artemis missions aimed at returning humans to the lunar surface by 2028. The slender tree stands unassumingly alongside a towering English elm in the park, which is home to 44 tree species.
