Record heat and drought fuel Europe's fierce wildfire season

An unusually wet winter followed by very low rainfall since spring and repeated record-breaking summer heatwaves have turned western European vegetation into tinder. Around 90% of wildfires are started by human activity, but this year's drought conditions have made ignition far easier. Spain and France are among the worst-hit countries in the current fire season. So-called "fire clouds" have also formed, further complicating firefighting efforts.
